Two years ago Touchstone Gallery created My Space on 7th. It’s a unique, non-juried opportunity for local artists to exhibit at Touchstone’s gallery. In a short time, My Space on 7th has become a gallery tradition. In these difficult times, it is more important then ever to have a thriving local arts scene.
For this event I wanted to create something that was simple, visually appealing and utilized the vertical space I was assigned. While I had a few modest production problems during the show, patrons overall offered me positive feedback.
Colorbox was inspired simply by the materials. ''The Materials are the Medium'' as the saying goes. So much art is so hard to approach, aims for lofty statements or tries to entertain and I have wanted to steer clear of that and just work with color and texture. These pieces were created with acrylics and are applied to simple papers that have a crumpled texture, which was a fun challenge to work with.
The natural shading these crumples provided adds to the nuances in the paint and brushstokes, culiminating in a series of aesthetically pleasing pieces that aim to soothe and trigger the imagination. They are meant to be shown in float frames, perhaps in front of a field of color, matting or fabric.
